Passive ability

You have a deal with Hismael, the old god known as the Acquirer. This is, in effect, a three-way pact, and it is a contract expected to be honored by all its parties.

Hismael:

  • Grants the following rituals with zero mana cost: Confer with Dead, Alter Flesh, Geas, The Circle of Ebaram. These rituals still require the appropriate preparation and associated sacrifice, with the exception that one may be performed at the same time as a Pact ritual for negligible additional time.
  • Grants the ability to perform a specific variant of the Pact ritual as outlined below.
Apollyon:
  • Must destroy all material possessions above 1g total value.
  • Benefits of Pact ritual, except for the soul itself, go to Hismael.
  • Hismael may sometimes make demands of his own.

The Pact ritual is a form of unequal contract between two beings. The "lesser" party to the contract loses something of great value to them and pledges their soul to the "greater" party upon their death, who in exchange is obligated to perform some service for the "lesser" party. Since the contract is mediated by old gods, it would be unwise for either party to shirk their responsibilities. The thing of great value is given as payment to the old gods mediating the Pact, which accounts for the relatively low cost in reagents and mana of the Ritual itself.
