Summary[]
Prologue[]
Rimuto and Narinae, with Barisse and Ilia, attend a speech given by High Priest Rayne Aerwoit. Barisse attempts to poison the High Priest, but an aged inquisitor named Calerus Kanterwal unwittingly consumes the poison in his stead.
Chapter 1[]
Rayne Aerwoit is announced to have died. Barisse Kaedim is arrested for involvement with his murder.
Meanwhile, an emergency council is called to choose the new High Priest. Narinae and Darata attend, where they both speak with conviction in support of Mallia Aerwoit. Mallia wins the vote of the council by the breadth of a hair and is chosen as the next High Priest.
Mallia summons Narinae and Darata to discuss Barisse's tendencies and their opinion of her late father.
