A Lich is a specific type of Undead that retains the intelligence and will that it had in life. They are known for their skeletal appearance, evil nature, and most of all, their powerful occult magics. Nascent Liches retain their flesh and blood for a short time before it rots away, leaving only a skeleton behind. Lichdom is one method of achieving immortality.
Most Liches were originally Human, though there are exceptions.
Creation[]
An occult magician may turn itself into a Lich with the Phylactery ritual, a very difficult ritual requiring extensive knowledge of occult magic. This ritual will split the Lich-to-be's soul into two parts, one of which will remain in the Lich's body, and the other of which will be stored in a phylactery.
Phylacteries[]
A phylactery is the key feature distinguishing a Lich from other sorts of sentient undead. Phylacteries contain a portion of the Lich's soul, allowing the Lich to resurrect itself if its body is destroyed. Phylacteries are often inanimate objects hidden in remote locations, though some Liches use living beings as phylacteries.
If a phylactery or the body of a Lich is destroyed, the portion of the Lich's soul contained therein is forever lost. It is only by destroying the body of a Lich who has no remaining phylacteries that a Lich can be forever vanquished.
If the body of a Lich is destroyed, the Lich will begin reconstructing itself at one of its phylacteries by recreating its skeleton and moving the soul fragment contained in the phylactery to the skeleton. This process does not alter the object serving as a phylactery, and takes between a day and week, depending on how practiced the Lich is in this process.
