The Temple of Pentarion, often referred to as the Black Temple, is the primary center of worship for the demiurge Pentarion. The temple is dedicated to the honoring of the dead, and also acts as the base of operations for the Knights of the Black Temple.
History[]
The Temple of Pentarion has existed as long as the other demiurge temples. Historically, it was a secluded place dedicated to honoring the dead, but during the chaotic years of the Plague its structure went through a dramatic set of changes. As the death toll rose Pentarionite priests set out to try and heal the sick and curb the spread of sickness, but met heavy opposition from the renegade cults and warbands of outlaws who ravaged the ruined Avylon during the time. As more and more people began to flock to the temple for refuge and the priests of Pentarion gained more respect among those displaced by the Plague and by Occult forces, a few braver individuals established a militarized branch under the leadership of Ferras Quinn, a lordless knight who sought to help the beleaguered priests and plague doctors of the temple. They soon became known as the Knights of the Black Temple, who dedicated themselves to defending the priests of Pentarion who worked tirelessly to heal the sick. After the Plague had ended, the young knightly order was officially attached to the temple. Their name would eventually be generalized to the temple itself, which is how it became known commonly as the Black Temple.
In recent times, the Black Temple's roll as healers and caretakers of the dead has become less well-known. The Temple Knights are the most common association with the temple, and it is primarily seen as an order dedicated to rooting out occult forces and hunting supernatural threats throughout civilized lands. The Black Temple is heavily mistrusted, seen in a superstitious light by the uneducated and resented by those in power for its unchecked authority in matters of the Occult. In the case of the young Cendizan Empire, the Temple Knights have gained a healthy level of respect and the Hero Emperor has displayed support for the order, but many nobles and commoners alike still resent their fanatical behavior in pursuit of their crusade against evil.
Structure[]
The Black Temple is headed by a Grand Cleric, often referred to as the Oracle, who intreprets the will of Pentarion and other demiurges with the help of a council of elders. Below them are the Keepers, who are charged with the care of the dead interred within the temple. Junior members of the temple include the Seekers, who travel beyond the temple in order to heal the sick and prevent the spread of disease, and acolytes who remain within the temple as apprentices. The Temple Knights have their own hierarchy, but are subservient to the Priests.
