The Witchwood is a thick and largely hostile expanse of forest in the southern regions of Avylon.
Geography[]
The Witchwood is notoriously known to be one of the most inhospitable areas in Panoulis, and is said to be as dangerous as some of the Elemental Planes. The trees in the Witchwood grow very thickly. It is not uncommon for well-cleared paths to be completely concealed within a day of being cleared, giving rise to rumors that the wood is cursed. While by no means the largest forest in the world, the hostile wildlife and superstition surrounding the woods have made it well-known. The swamp's border with the Redmarsh to the south is another cause for its harsh reputation, as the swamps also hold a rather dark history.
Inhabitants[]
The Witchwood is a notorious haunt for many more savage creatures, and it is prominently known to house a large population of more dangerous variants of Chimera. Many attempts by the Avylonian Empire to expand and colonize the woods met with failure before the Plague due to its dangerous inhabitants.
The woods are also known to house cultists, apostate mages, and other sorts of groups not well loved in gentler society. It is a region of monsters and witches, and many centuries of this has given the woods a very real supernatural presence. The trees themselves have a dark sentience, and the many magics woven throughout the forest over the course of time have given the entire expanse of wilderness a dark and malevolent presence. Only the hardest and least sane bandits and criminals operate from even the edges of the Witchwood, and those who live near its outskirts have a healthy level of fear for the place.
